Who we are

About The Obsidian

The Obsidian is an independent newsroom covering politics, business, and culture for readers who want depth over noise.

Our story

Founded in 2026 in the United Kingdom, The Obsidian started as a small newsletter focused on British politics and policy. Within a few months, interest from American readers led us to expand coverage to US affairs and global developments.

Today we publish reporting, analysis, and commentary from contributors on both sides of the Atlantic. We are funded primarily by reader subscriptions and selective advertising, which means our loyalty is to the story — not to advertisers or investors.

What we believe

Radical Transparency

We publish our methodology, share our data, and correct errors promptly. Readers deserve to know how the news is made.

Editorial Independence

No shareholder, advertiser, or donor dictates our coverage. Our journalists answer to readers alone.

Global Perspective

We report stories from the UK, the US, and beyond — on the ground, not from press releases.

Reader-First

Subscriptions, not clicks, fund our work. This lets us prioritize depth over sensationalism.

Editorial standards

Every article published by The Obsidian is edited by at least one senior editor. We verify claims against primary sources, seek comment from parties named in a story, and disclose any conflicts of interest.

We avoid anonymous sources where possible. When they are necessary, the editor-in-chief must approve their use and we explain why anonymity was granted.

Corrections are published at the foot of the article and logged permanently in our Corrections archive.
