The Drugs-for-Votes Case the DOJ Walked Away From

Federal prosecutors in Puerto Rico had built a case alleging a prison gang was distributing narcotics to inmates in exchange for votes for a gubernatorial candidate. Then, ProPublica reports, Washington stopped the investigation.

The case was unusual in its specificity. Prosecutors had identified prison staff cooperating with the scheme, and were working — when the investigation was halted — to determine whether the campaign of Jenniffer González-Colón had any knowledge of or connection to it.

The decision to stop came from leadership in Washington, according to multiple officials cited in the report. No public reason has been provided.

González-Colón's office has denied any involvement and was not, at the time the case was paused, charged with anything.
