1,500 Kilometres From Home: Ukraine's Long-Range Hit on Russian Gas

Ukrainian forces struck gas facilities in Russia's Orenburg region — more than 1,500 kilometres from the border — in the latest sign that Kyiv's deep-strike capability is not a one-off but a doctrine.

The Orenburg strike, confirmed by President Zelenskyy, represents one of the deepest publicly acknowledged Ukrainian operations into Russian territory. The targets were processing infrastructure, not extraction sites — chosen, analysts believe, to maximise economic disruption while minimising civilian risk.

For Kyiv, the appeal is double. Each successful long-range hit erodes Russia's ability to fund the war from energy receipts, and each one demonstrates to Western donors that Ukrainian-designed and Ukrainian-built systems are now central to the campaign.

Moscow has acknowledged damage. It has not detailed it.
