The Three-Day Truce That Couldn't Hold

A US-brokered pause in the Russia-Ukraine war expired this week with more than 200 drones launched into Ukrainian airspace overnight. The Kremlin says there are 'no specifics' on what comes next.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces fired more than two hundred drones at Ukrainian cities within hours of the three-day American-brokered ceasefire ending — a pace that, by Kyiv's account, was higher than in the days before the truce began.

Moscow's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin had no 'specifics' on a path to ending Europe's largest war since 1945, despite remarks last week from President Vladimir Putin suggesting the conflict could be 'winding down.'

Inside Ukraine, the political reading is unforgiving: the truce is being interpreted not as a step toward negotiation but as a tactical pause used by Russia to reset its long-range strike rotation. Air defence officials report a noticeable shift toward decoy swarms designed to exhaust Western-supplied interceptors.

Washington's posture remains studied. The administration has neither blamed Moscow for the resumption nor signalled new pressure. Allied capitals describe a holding pattern that may not survive the summer.
